Don’t
Take The Bait—
Phishing Scams Can Harm Your Identity
Internet
criminals are getting more and more creative. In fact,
they are using legitimate names, logos and hyperlinks
to make themselves look like true businesses. Even though
these sites and e-mail correspondences may look authentic,
they are indeed not. Instead they are a trap to steal
your identity—and your money.
How do you tell the difference? A phish e-mail often
will include a hyperlink that the asks you to “confirm”
or to “verify” information about your financial
accounts. And, if you do fall for it, any information
that the phisher collects can be used to open accounts
in your name, make purchases or commit a crime.
You should always do your best to avoid phish emails.
Here are a few guidelines:
-
Be suspicious if an e-mail asks for an urgent request
for personal financial information.
-
If you have any suspicions that a message might not
be authentic, don’t use the website links in
the e-mail.
- Avoid
filling out any forms that ask for personal financial
information when sent by e-mail.
-
Make
sure your web browser is up to date and all security
patches have been applied.
-
Be diligent in checking your account statements, ensuring
that all transactions completed on your account are
legitimate.
